Podcast Interview:

RC: Hello, everyone. This is Liz Harvey, coming to you from our studios in New York City, where we are dedicated to bringing you top quality advice from many of the leading expert professionals across the US. In today's episode, we are speaking with chiropractor Dr. Michael Errichiello of Health One Center located in Ridgefield, New Jersey. Dr. Errichiello graduated from St. John's University with a degree in biology and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College. Dr. Errichiello is a member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors.

Today we're going to talk about a very important topic. Subluxations.

Hello, Dr. Errichiello, how are you today?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: I'm doing fine.

RC: Well, thanks for joining me.

How do you describe what a subluxation is?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: Well, subluxation, or more precisely, the vertebral subluxation complex is when one or more of your vertebrae or the spinal bones lose their normal positions due to our daily activity, stress, or trauma, and they interfere with the nerves that they are meant to protect. The misalignment of the vertebrae and pinching of the nerve is called a subluxation.

What are the effects of a subluxation on the spinal nerves and the nervous system?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: When the spinal nerves are compressed or pinched, there are many different sequelae that can develop: Abnormal joint motion, pressure on spinal nerves, muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight, or even go into spasm. They may develop swelling and inflammation. The spinal disk can bulge or herniate and degenerate. As a result, you can develop premature arthritic changes in your spine. The spinal decay and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of your body to malfunction.

Can people tell if they have a subluxation? Are there any symptoms?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: Most often, in the initial phase of subluxation, people will not know that they are there, just as people will not know whether they have heart disease, or diabetes, or cancer. They don't know until the symptoms develop, but the disease process has been an ongoing period for a long period of time. Eventually, you will start to develop some symptoms, such as losing flexibility in your neck or lower back, symptoms that come and go like headaches, and so on. Chiropractic care is needed to prevent subluxations from recurring.

What are some chiropractic techniques that can correct subluxations?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: There are many chiropractic techniques that work to correct subluxations. At Chiropractic Healthcare Associates, we do many forms of osseous adjustments. There are also many non-force techniques, soft tissue techniques, and instrument-assisted techniques that we use depending on the patient. We adjust newborn infants to super-seniors, but you cannot use the same techniques on everyone. That is why my partner, Dr. Zalite and myself, are trained in many different techniques, so that we can care for all patients.

Is ongoing chiropractic care needed to prevent subluxations from reoccurring?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: Oh, yes. The reason is that once you leave the office, I cannot control the way you do things. We explain to our patients about proper lifting, proper exercise, proper sleep, sleep posture, proper workstation ergonomics, but I can't look over your shoulder all day to tell you what you're doing wrong. Therefore, your normal activity can cause you to subluxate. We encourage our patients to maintain their spines periodically, just as you maintain your teeth, and you maintain your car or home. If you wait until the engine light comes on in your car to tell you that you have no oil, what would happen? Ongoing chiropractic care is needed to prevent subluxations from recurring.

RC: Thank you so much, Dr. Errichiello. We know you're extremely busy, so I just want to thank you for your time and help today.
