Dr. Errichiello graduated from St. John's University with a degree in biology and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College. Dr. Errichiello is a member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors.

Today, we're going to talk about a very important topic:
My Journey to Chiropractic

Hello, Dr. Errichiello, how are you today?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: Doing fine Liz, thank you.

RC: Well, let's get started.

What were some of the influences that led to your decision to become a chiropractor?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: My journey started a long time ago. Growing up, I always wanted to be a professional in some capacity. I started to think about dentistry, but didn't like the confines of dealing with just the mouth. I chose medicine, and I actually was in medical school for two years in Paris, France. That was a tremendous experience, but still didn't feel right for me. Being an athlete and health conscious, I couldn't see treating the body with medication and surgery. A friend introduced me to his chiropractor, and I loved their approach to health and lifestyle. So here I am, 36 years later.

When did you become a licensed chiropractor, and where did you start practicing?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: I started 36 years ago and my first practice was in Riverdale in the Bronx, and I graduated from New York Chiropractic College. After a short trial as an associate there, I decided to start my own practice and I was in Palisade Park, New Jersey for over 20 years. I moved my practice up to Ridgefield, the current location that we have at HealthOne, which is a multi-discipline practice with both chiropractic and physical therapy.

What are some of the biggest changes you have experienced in the chiropractic industry?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: I think one of the biggest changes is our acceptance by the medical profession. There were times, years ago, when medical doctors thought that we did not have a valuable service for our patients. Most often, this opinion was based on their lack of knowledge of what we do and how we do it, as well as thinking that our education was subpar, which is far from the truth. These days, with the scientific research showing the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for back pain, neck pain, and headaches, we are now growing acceptance by the medical specialties. We have orthopedists, neurologists, osteopaths, dentists and even cardiologists referring patients to our office now.

Do you have specific chiropractic methods or areas of specialty that you focus on?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: Our standard of practice is the spinal adjustment, which is the art of putting the bones back into position in the spine. We adjust the spine as well as we adjust arms, legs, and hands and feet, every joint of the body can be adjusted when it is out of alignment. Over the years, chiropractic has evolved and incorporated a lot of soft tissue techniques that can also benefit our patients. In our office, we utilize a technique called "Graston," that's GRASTON, which is an instrument-assisted soft tissue treatment that is very effective on muscles and ligaments.

My partner, Dr. Zalite, and myself, are certified in this technique as well as a taping technique called "Kinesio Taping." This taping is very effective in helping patients that have a lot of pain and swelling at their injury site. It is effective with sports injuries, and we care for a lot of athletes in our practice. You may have even seen this type of taping technique on baseball players, basketball players, tennis, and track and field athletes. They usually have some sort of colored tape on their joints or body part to help them prevent injury.

What do you like the most about being a chiropractor?

Dr. Michael Errichiello: The most important thing that I like about it is my ability to help people in severe pain with treatment that does not have any side effects. In this day and age of people in pain, getting addicted to opioid drugs, it is very rewarding to see patients respond without drugs. Still, there are many people unfamiliar with chiropractic care and are unaware that there is a natural treatment that can relieve their pain without the need for opioid drugs. I am hoping by the use of this podcast, that we can educate more and more people to the benefits of chiropractic care and therefore, give them another method of treatment for their injuries.
